- Opposed terrorist attacks inside Israel and advocated confining attacks to the West Bank and Gaza.
- Captured by Israel in 2002 - serving long prison sentence for multiple murders.
- His conduct during the trial and the fact that he is in prison has boosted his popularity among Palestinians. Will alost certainly do well if he chooses to stand as a candidate from his cell.
- Israel may release him early if they believe he is prepared to reach a deal with Israel.
